HEPATOTOXICITY

Hepatotoxicity is a term used to describe those instances in which a medication or chemical substance has caused injury to the liver.

A number of drugs can cause liver toxicity. The symptoms of hepatotoxicity (liver damage) can be mild and can escape notice. It can also lead to permanent injury and death. Therefore, it is important to detect hepatotoxicity in its early stages so that steps can be taken to arrest its development and allow the liver to heal.

The symptoms of drug induced hepatitis are similar to that of infectious hepatitis. Patient may suffer from any of the following symptoms :

  • General malaise (feeling unwell)
  • Anorexia (loss of appetite)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Yellow skin and eyes
  • Itching, skin rash
  • Diarrhoea (watery and severe)
